What is ear wax?
The glands in the skin of the ear canal naturally produce ear wax, also known as cerumen. It is a mixture of dead skin cells, hair, and secretions from the glands that help protect and clean the ear canal. Ear wax helps to lubricate the ear canal, prevent infections, and trap dust and other foreign particles that can enter the ear. It also has antibacterial and antifungal properties, which help prevent infections. Generally considered a normal and healthy part of the ear, excessive ear wax can occasionally cause hearing problems or discomfort, necessitating a doctor’s removal.

How to Remove Ear Wax
Unfortunately, genetics determines the dimensions and form of your ear canal, as well as the quantity and type of ear wax. We advise using one squirt of Earol, a sterile, sealed olive oil spray, in each ear once or twice a week to help minimize ear wax accumulation.
We advise using two squirts of Earol twice or three times a day for three or four days if you have a blocked ear. After that, you should go to one of our skilled microsuction ear wax removal clinics. Our London microsuction ear wax removal facility is open for appointments.
Please avoid using cotton wool after using Earol, as it will simply absorb the olive oil and prevent it from doing its job effectively. We advise against self-syringing, as it could push the ear wax deeper into your ear. Barnet Ear Care especially advises against using ear candles since they can lead to major issues; do not remove ear wax. We have written a piece about the dangers of using ear candles.
The Procedure
Microsuction is a fantastic way to get rid of wax. Your consultant may advise you to use olive oil or softening drops before your session, but it’s not always necessary. The consultant will gently insert a tiny microscope and a low-pressure medical suction device into the ear canal throughout the process. The consultant can remove the wax by attaching a very thin pole at the end of the suction tube.
Using no liquids makes it faster, cleaner, and more comfortable than other methods. The symptoms should start to improve right away, and you’ll be ready to return home that same day.
